We are looking forward to the festival this year. We have been coming ever since it was held at Columbus College many years ago. (Note: Ossahatchee did not begin at Columbus College - it was organized by a completely different organization.)
My daughter is now married to a young soldier from Oklahoma who is from the Creek Nation and we have two beautiful grandchildren who are ½ Creek.
The festival means more to us now than ever. I think it is so important for my grandchildren to learn, know, understand, and be proud of their strong heritage.
They love the festival, the costumes, the music and the dances and they are excited that it is that time of year again. My son-in-law will not be attending this year…he was badly injured in Iraq on June 23rd and has had to return to Walter Reed Army Hospital for more surgery.
Here are some pictures we took last year of my granddaughter, Autumn Brooke, in her ribbon dress and showing off her dance moves.

O'Siyo! Wado for having this wonderful website and information. I'm physically unable to attend Powwows anymore and this leaves me full of sadness and longing. I'm half Cherokee and grew up learning the old ways. My great-grandmother and grandmother were medicine women and I learned much from them. :-) I would like to hear about it from this website or from someone directly via email...perhaps? ;-)
Wishing you all the best, the ones who will be attending...enjoy and bask in the Great Mystery of all of us.
Marianna   15/September/2007
I am counting the days till the big day arrives. I have attended 2 years, and am always amazed at the beauty of it all. Thank you.
Whitney Miller   14/August/2007
We attended our first powwow here in 2004, and we are counting the days till this years powwow, when we can bring our 2 year old daughter to her first powwow. Although we are not NA, we felt very at home and we enjoyed the drumming and chanting. The whole experience made us feel closer to the earth and that is something we all need! Thanks for allowing us to enjoy this wonderful experience!
Shon Ingram   24/October/2006
I must say that this pow-wow is one of the best that I have attended. I enjoyed the time Saturday with my NA brothers and sisters. The living history exhibits were amazing. Especially Sawgrass! Hope to see everyone back next year.
Raven Banchi   20/October/2006
This is a wonderful pow wow and the first one I ever went to. This pow wow cranked up the fire in my spirit to learn more about my native ancestry and I am so glad I made that first pow wow. I now travel all over the southeast to see and also drum at the pow wow's. If you are reading this and are trying to decide to go to the pow wow or any pow wow then please do. Some go to enjoy the venders and eat some great food but also go to heal your spirit with the sound of the drum because the drum is the heartbeat of our Mother Earth.
Lisa Arredondo-Veress   17/October/2006
Last year my husband, new baby daughter and I attended the pow wow last October. As a member of the Penoscot Nation I felt at home, joining the dancing with my baby in my arms, surrounded by people from other nations.
For those of you interested in learning more about the Penobscots and their affliliation:
"The Penobscot tribe, together with the Mi'kmaq, Maliseet, Passamaquoddy, and Abenaki Indians, were members of the old Wabanaki Confederacy. These allies from the eastern seaboard region spoke related languages, and "Abenaki" and "Wabanaki" have the same Algonquian root, meaning "people from the east." The Penobscot are not affiliated with the Abenakis today, and distance themselves from the Abenaki of New England. There are 3000 Penobscot Indians now, most of whom live in Maine.
Like other Wabanaki tribes, the Penobscot Indians were longstanding enemies of the Iroquois, particularly the Mohawk. This led them to side with the French and Algonquins in the costly war against the English and Iroquoians. The English paid out bounties for dead Penobscots, but it was European diseases (especially smallpox) that really decimated their nation, killing at least 75% of the population. Still angry with the British, the much-reduced Penobscot tribe supported the Americans in the Revolutionary War, and having picked the winning side they were not expelled from New England, remaining on reservations in their native Maine to this day. Recently the Penobscot Indians and their Passamaquoddy allies--despite formidable harassment from white neighbors--successfully argued that their treaty rights had been violated, and in 1980 received a settlement of $81 million for land that was illegally stolen from them. The Penobscot tribe was able to buy back some of their ancestral lands, and today they are a sovereign nation working to maintain their traditions, language, and self-sufficiency." (www.native-languages.org/penobscot.htm)
I look forward to dancing again this year. Thank you for allowing us to participate!
Elena Arnold   12/October/2006
We have been gone from Ossahatchee for 3 years and look forward to going this year. This pow wow is special to me. I danced one year with a Creek friend of mine, while she was in her wheelchair. The circle is big and there was room for her to maneuver without difficulty, to an intertribal. We had fun!
Allison A. Cush   1/October/2006
My son is 5 years old and has just realized that part of our heritage is Native American. Cherokee to be exact. He has decided to be an "Indian" for Halloween. He has been researching the proper dress and paint, beads, tools, weapons for a few months now. I look forward to bringing him to the Pow-wow. He is going to be amazed and thrilled to learn about "his people".
Gene Alexander   10/August/2006
I finally got a chance to see the Ossahatchee Festival in 2005 and it brought tears to my eyes to see the reality of what was before the white man. I too am part Cherokee and have never had the opportunity to view in person how our ancestors graced this wonderful nation. I only wish I had attended in the previous years. I hope to be there for the 2006 Festival. Great event!!
Renee' Chance   23/October/2005
My name is Renee' Chance. I went to the POW WOW in Hamilton, Ga. I really enjoyed all the colors, dance, food, and most of all I enjoyed the Indians. I, myself, am Cherokee. I know for certain I will keep going. It is part of my heritage and culture.
Buddy Korzan   14/October/2005
Words cannot describe the look and feel of this event...all I can think of to say is go if you get the chance!
GARY W. CHANCEY   16/July/2005
My family loves to camp in Pine Mountain, for 5 years we have heard great things about the POW WOW, for us like many South Georgians we love Indian culture. To sure you all we will be joining you in October 2005. And one more thing we enjoyed was the website. My grandson was amazed, only at age 8----he wants to meet a real chief. see you soon
James M. Stone   26/May/2005
The Powwow of 2003 was my first. I was blown away by the honor extended to the veterans. As a Coast Guard Vet and a participant of Operation Urgent Fury/Helping Hands Granada Invasion), I was especially touched by the fact that these folks remembered us! The ceremony reminded all of us that we are all part of a Brotherhood that transcends race, creed, or nationality. Honorable Warriors. I wasn't the only vet to 'get dust in my eyes! I went back last year(2004) and I intend to go back this year. Semper Paratus. May the Great Spirit in all his forms guide your footsteps to the Journey's End.
Joan Hill   18/Jan/2005
Stumbled across the Ossahatchee Pow-Wow on the Saturday, 2004 whilst on holiday from England. I was totally gobsmacked! Could have stayed there forever. My daughter back home was so jealous. It was the best day of our holiday (except for Graceland). Would love to see you all again in 2005 - must start saving up! Many thanks
Joan Hill, Sheffield, England
Jan Cox   22/Nov/2004
I enjoyed the pow-wow this year as always. I haven't missed one yet! I always look forward to seeing old frineds here and making new ones. Your event has become one of the best in the southeast! It has taken lots of work and effort to make it so. Thanks to Lisa and Nancy and all the others behind the scenes who work so hard to make it so enjoyable for us! Thanks again!
Ashley Brummett   6/Nov/2004
This years pow wow was my first. I am young and very open minded. At the pow wow I was able to branch out and learn about other cultures. Getting a look first hand and being able to feel involved was so much more effective then sitting in a history class. Not only was it a chance for me to learn about a culture I was not too introduced to, but it was a time for my family and I to bond. Watching the cultural dances moved me, I was never aware of such things. The pow wow was an experience I will never forget, I believe everyone should experience a thing as great as the pow wow at least once in their short lives.
Elizabeth Williams   6/Nov/2004
I must say with all honesty, I did not plan on staying the entire day on Saturday nor did I plan on going back on Sunday, but my daughters and I stayed till it closed and then went back Sunday for more and stayed till it closed again. I had the best time and it was my first Pow Wow. I will be going back again next year, Thank you all for the best time I have had in years any where. I cant wait for the pictures to be posted. Hope to see them soon. Again I have to say, that was the most fun I have had. Everyone was great.
Melanie Tanner   23/Oct/2004
This was my first Pow Wow. And it will not be my last. I saw and heard things that had been only in my dreams. LOL!...I think I know know why it seems I walk to the beat of a different drum!! Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to see what I have missed for so long. EVERYONE was so kind and informative. I'll be going again next year and hope to become more involved in the future.
Randy & Cindi Sanders   20/Oct/2004

Rose Marie Morris, Manassas. GA   18/Oct/2004
My husband, child and I are from South East, GA (Manassas) and we drove up this past weekend to attend this year's POWWOW. After growing up around my Cherokee friends, I have always been in awe and I was not disappointed in our trip. My little girl is 6 years old and she will remember that she and her mother "danced with the Indians" for the rest of her life. I was so glad to see the pride and the sincerity that was put into this event and will make every effort to bring others with me. My nephew is part Cherokee and my niece is part Chippewa and it is time they learned their heritage.
Thank you for making it possible.
Molly Hood   18/Oct/2004
My husband and I would not miss this experience for anything!! We always leave feeling more connected to Mother Earth and to what truly matters in this life. Peace to all ~

Tina White   16/Oct/2002
I ' m so glad that our comunity brought back its heritage it has answered many of my questions . My family doesn't talk about our past and I'm one of the few left. You see in Columbus it was against the law to walk the streets if you were indian . So that my family wouldn't loose our land we blended in as best we could . We saved the land but lost our heritage .Then saddly we lost that also. Thanks , Tina White (white dove )
Susan   15/Oct/2002
I just wanted to say that my whole family enjoys coming to the powwows. It allows us to stay in touch with our heritage. And we hope that we have many more changes to go to the powwows.
Thank you so much, Susan
      14/Oct/2002
I attended the Pow-Wow last year for the first time with friends and my four youngest children as a Homeschool Field Trip. We enjoyed ourselves so much we are going to be there again on Friday! I loved the demonstrations, the dancing, and of course the turquoise! When I saw the tipi set up in the field I felt so very Indian for the first time in my life. I have always been quite proud of my Cherokee heritage, but last year was the first time I felt it inside. My husband is proud of his Swedish/German descent, and it is very important for me to introduce our blonde little blue eyed offspring to their Mother's proud heritage as well. And what a fun and interesting way to do it!
Jim Blackwell   06/Oct/2002
I have been to every POW-WOW in Hamilton thus far..and Hopefully the "CREATOR" will allow me many more. It does my heart good to see people of all nations sharing in the sacred circle, exchanging ideas and customs. I have just begun my journey along the "Red Road" and your POW-WOW helps all nations better understand each other....Thank you.

I am the little girl in the red feather on your website from this year's PowWow. I am 7 and this is my third year to dance at Ossahatchee. My homeschool group, The Bent Twig, came on Friday and I came back with my Brownie Troop#35 on Saturday. I love to dance and my grandmother is making my shawl dance regalia. I am Cherokee descent from North Georgia. On my father's side, I am descended from Onadaga (spelling) from New York. I have made many friends at the powwows and I love to see the horse Cheetah and all the beautiful jewelry and art, but I love to dance especially at night. It makes me so happy. Everyone should get to love the circle as much as I do. See you again next year....

Thanks for a great Web Site. I commend you and all involved.

I attended the Pow wow on Sunday of last year and thoroughly enjoyed it, wish I had attended on Saturday also. Several of my grandchildren attended on Friday , school day and they absolutely loved it and learned so much.

I look forward to going this year both days and hope to have my Regalia made by then, so I may dance in the circle, Even if I still can't walk hope to be able to go in the circle in my wheelchair.

The Drum competition was awesome and the dancers were spectacular, such a reverance for the Grand Entry and the Honoring of the Veterans!!!

The demonstrations were good and hope to see more this year and have more vendors selling authentic NA Crafts along with skins, to use to make crafts such as moccasins, medicine bags, etc, and sage, other sacred herbs, and beads, lots of beads want to have loose beads and hairpipe made from bone and material to use to make chokers and earrings, with findings also.
